East Hostel to be allotted to boys:HC
CUTTACK: In a significant judgment, the high courtdirected the Ravenshaw University to allot the East Hostel to the boys. A high court bench, comprising Chief Justice V Gopalagowda and Justice B N Mohapatra, pronounced the verdict on Monday, directing the university authorities to grant the hostel to the boys.
The hostel allotment issue had triggered a massive students' agitation at Ravenshaw University. Since 1920, the East Hostel had belonged to boys. But after its renovation, the authorities decided to convert it into a girls' hostel, sparking a huge row.
Demanding a change in this decision, students had virtually paralyzed all academic activities in the varsity. In the wake of the stalemate, two PILs were filed in the high court in October 2010 for the restoration of normalcy on campus and a permanent solution to the East Hostel row.
Acting on the PIL, the high court had formed a seven-member committee, headed by retired Justice A K Parichha in November 2010. The committee, after reviewing the entire situation and holding discussions various stakeholders of the matter, had submitted a detailed report to the court on January 20. In its report, the committee had favoured allotment of the East Hostel to the boys.
Along with granting the East Hostel to the boys, the HC also directed the authorities to grant the historic West Hostel to the girls. Currently, the West Hostel is functioning as the Ravenshaw Management centre. The court has also directed the state government to allocate necessary funds to the varsity for construction for the two proposed hostels in the campus. "The court has granted the East Hostel to the boys, but at the same time, has also directed the university authorities to allot the historic West Hostel to the girls, which is now functioning as the classroom of a self-financing course," said Suvendu Mohanty, one of the petitioner.
The high court judgement has made the students happy. "We are really happy as our efforts have paid off," said Pratap Mohanty, an agitating student.
"Till now, we have not received a copy of the judgement. Once we get a copy of the order, we will decide our further course of action," University registrar Smarapriya Mishra said.
